When to Travel

January is referred to as a green season and a hot month. This depends on which part of the country you are expecting to visit. Generally, the country is very hot in the coastal regions, especially in areas that are along the Indian Ocean.Other parts of the country, especially western Tanzania may receive short rains. This month is the best calving season on the Ndutu Plains.

The weather on this month is similar to January. Temperatures continue to rise, and wildebeest are still on the Ndutu Plains.This is the best month to enjoy some decent game drive experience. If you prefer some challenging and adventurous experience, this month is the best for trekking Kilimanjaro.

This is still a good month to travel. Like January and February, this is a quiet month making it one of the best times to travel for people who like fewer tourist crowds. It is on this month when the wildebeest Calving season end and the herds slowly start to move toward western Serengeti through the Central part of the park.

The weather condition this month is still hot but there is a high chance of experiencing heavy rains, especially at the end of the month. This is the month that heavy rains. In summary, the best time to travel this month is at the beginning of the month, and Wildlife Safaris, Mountain trekking, and Zanzibar Vacations are some of the experiences that you should consider adding to your bucket list.

This is a heavy rainy month. The lush green grasses start to emerge creating fantastic and greenish landscape views. This is a low-season month to travel. It is not advised to travel on this month unless you have something that needs you to go. In other words, If you are planning to experience abundant wildlife like the big 5 and others, this won’t be the perfect time to travel.

If you are an adventure traveler who likes unique experiences other than wildlife safari, You may consider this month. April is the perfect month for bird lovers and landscape photographers. You can also have a chance to experience boat/canoeing trips in some of the parks like Lake Manyara and Arusha National Park.

May is part of the long rainy season in Tanzania. As explained in April, this month is not advised and if possible you should have to avoid to travel on this month if you don’t have a special purpose.

Late June is referred to as the best time to go on safari. This month may still receive a few drops but this depends on the lengths of the rain season which sometimes ends in late May. June is a winter season in most parts of the country and it is colder in the Northern and Southern Highlands of Tanzania.

The migration this month is almost on the western part of Serengeti, approaching the Grumeti river. At the beginning of June, the grass is still stalled making it difficult for wildlife sightings, but it is much better than in May and April.

June is the perfect month for Nature photographers, birdwatchers,s and wildebeest Migration experiences in western Serengeti. We advise you to plan your trip starting in late June so you can increase your chances of sighting more wild animals.

July is a peak time in Tanzania, it is one of the months that is referred to as the best time to visit Tanzania. The weather is on this month The weather on this month in Tanzania is perfectly cool as it is the winter season. The daytime temperatures range from moderate at 20°C (68°F) to warm temperatures in Dar es Salaam at 29°C (84°F). Nighttime temperatures generally drop to 18°C (65°F) in Indian Ocean regions and 6°C (48°F) in the Northern and Southern highlands of Tanzania.

This is the best month to see wildlife in most national parks and game reserves found in Tanzania. If you like to experience the big 5, July is the perfect month to go as grasses and other small are short that provide easy sighting of animals.  It is also the best month to go for Beach vacations in Zanzibar and Mafia Island.

This month is also the best time to climb mount Kilimanjaro.

August is still dry and cool. it is travelers’ peak season in Tanzania,  The weather is excellent at this time of year, although it can get a bit windy in August and wildfires are a common sight sweeping through the dry grasslands. 

September is still a Peak season. The migration is still in the north and the herds are in both parks, Serengeti and Masai Mara. This is also the time to witness herds of animals in their hundreds as they cross the Mara river on their migration journey. September is also the perfect month to see herds of elephants at Tarangire National Park. Adventure lovers and Mountain climbers can still enjoy their hike of majestic Kilimanjaro as this is also considered the best month to climb mount Kilimanjaro. Like in July and August, this month is also the best for a Zanzibar beach vacation.

 

The most important note that you should note is that the Northern Tanzania national parks become more crowded during peak season. Other destinations in the Southern and Western circuits are less crowded, if you are a tourist who wants to avoid the crowd these destinations might be your best option.

October is the end of the peak season in Tanzania. The weather will be dry Earlier in the month. Short rain season may begin at the end of the month. It’s still a good time to spot a variety of animals and birds around the country. Although this is the recommended month to travel, please note and prepare yourself for any weather changes, especially at the end of the month.

The best places to visit this month include Mount Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar, All national parks, and game reserves.

Short rains are expected to fall at the end of October and this month. This is a great time to take advantage of low season rates and is still a popular time to travel. The rains tend to be overnight, but there is a risk of rain during the day as well. Migrating herds are starting to travel south from Kenya, so crossings can be seen in the north of the Serengeti. November is the start of Tanzania’s Green Season. It offers superb birdwatching opportunities, with migratory birds arriving in their thousands.

December falls in the midst of the short rains so except some rain and wet weather. Tourist numbers are low for the first half of the month, but for two weeks over Christmas and New Year everything is choc-a-block, so it’s best to avoid the last-minute rush and book well in advance.

December is a great time for bird watchers as many migratory birds arrive. This is particularly good in southern parks such as Selous and Tarangire National Park in the north is a birdwatchers’ paradise. Look out for red-necked spurfowl, purple grenadier and cinnamon-breasted buntings to name just a few.

By now the migrant birds have arrived in full force, which makes for some superb birding opportunities. The wildebeest have returned to the short grass plains of the southern Serengeti to calve. With their more limited infrastructure, the wild parks of the southern safari circuit become more challenging during December and for the duration of the wet season.
